The earthquake in Sumatra

The devastation left behind by the earthquake in Sumatra is unbelievable. Although this time of year is about celebration, forgiving, happiness and planning a new year, there was never a time that would have been ready for such a colossal natural disaster.

My heart goes out to the relatives of those lost or killed. Many people I know either directly or indirectly know people in Sri Lanka, India or Thailand, such is the popularity of the region.

Despite the grief, there are predators out there already capiltalising on the good will of the millions of people around the world prepared to offer some financial aid to those that need it. Reputable charities are desperately seeking funding to assist the aid process but already spam has arrived asking to donate to dubiously named charities and bank accounts.

Don't let anyone come to you asking for money. If you want to donate then listen to the news channels and look for registered charities like the Disaster Emergency Committee at www.dec.org.uk {currently down due to demand for information/donations etc at time of publish}.

The earthquake itself was known to shift the Earth on its axis by nearly an inch and because of the huge shift in tectonics, certain islands in the area have been lifted skywards by as much as 2 metres. Not only have vertical changes occured but horizontal, causing maps to be out by several metres in some locations. There is more information in the Taipei Times seen here.

Not only should people give what they can, the economy thrives on tourism so if you're looking for a break in 2005 then take your wallet to the countries affected and help by spending.
