Google's Recent Update

It's finally over! Google has finished it's recent re-index and updated both the backlinks and the PageRank databases. I've been closely watching a lot of websites to see the impact of any new spam filtering or link dampening techniques employed and to be honest, in terms of the SERPS, not much has changed.

Taking this site as an example, no gains were made for any of the phrases I am strong for and traffic is consistent.

It also looks like my good friend Gavin from the article "why has my site disappeared from Google?" has resurfaced [link] after being inexplicably dismissed from the results even though on the surface there was no apparent reason for this.

Minor gains have been made on content rich sites but the one thing I was hoping for the most was the destruction of repetitive directories, particularly in the tourism sector. Competition is too strong for the small guest houses trying to make a living and promoting online and it's one area I wish to see addressed. Of course, Google cannot work in terms of industry sectors but it can certainly dampen the effect of viral linking and reciprocation which is how these monsters breed.

But losing those would no doubt impact the Adsense market too so all things in good measure I guess.

In conclusion

Nothing out the ordinary. A predictable and forgettable update really.
