I guess you thought that this way you could check if your site was already indexed by google. Am I right?

Usually when you type an url in google search bar (google toolbar) it redirects you to the existing site. It doesn't mean that your site was successfully indexed! 

If it didn't come up I suppose that server wasn't responding.

However, if you try to search it through google web search( google site) it should return the pages that contain your url as a keyword within the content.

If you want to see how many pages of your site are actually indexed by google you should try this format:

site:www.stroudcleaning.co.uk

to check for the backlinks use:

link:www.stroudcleaning.co.uk

for current cache try:

cache:www.stroudcleaning.co.uk

Don't forget to submit your site to Google, as well as to many other serach engines.

To get your sites indexed by google fast you will have to create a free account with google. Then go to:

http://www.google.com/intl/en/submit_content.html

Choose google webmaster tools, add your site there and submit a sitemap.
You can create a google compatible xml sitemap at http://www.xml-sitemaps.com.

Create and upload robots.txt to your server. You can add multiple sites. They will be indexed within 3-4 days.
